Contrary to initial reports from Cagayan officials saying that both passengers had been found dead, the provincial government of Apayao has offered an update on the situation and stated that the two passengers aboard the tragic aircraft are still missing. In the midst of the uncertainty, the Apayao government emphasized the significance of only relying on verifiable information, making it clear that the only verified detail was the potential crash site of the missing Cessna 152.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is leading ongoing efforts to find the missing passengers through search and rescue operations. Anshum Rajkumar Konde, a student pilot, and Capt. Edzel John Lumbao Tabuzo has been named as the passenger.
The operator of the aircraft, Echo Air, had its operations suspended as the investigation got underway, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). Additionally, the investigation will now be joined by investigators from the Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board.
When the Cessna-152, with the call sign RP-C8598, vanished on August 1 while flying from Laoag, Ilocos Norte, to Tuguegarao, Cagayan, the dreadful chain of events began. The final message from the aircraft was picked up about 35 nautical miles northwest of Alcala, Cagayan, leaving a trail of doubt and anxiety.
The Tuguegarao flight service station sent an INCERFA communication to the CAAP at 2:37 p.m., August 01, 2023 noting the uncertainty regarding the safety of the aircraft and the welfare of its passengers. The search for the tragic jet and its passengers has continued ever since.
This unfortunate tragedy makes it the third time in the Philippines this year that a Cessna aircraft has been a part of something so tragic. All four occupants of a Cessna aircraft that crashed in February of this year near Mayon Volcano's crater perished in the accident. Similarly, in March, a Cessna plane that had been reported missing in January was discovered 44 days later, with six confirmed fatalities.
Updates on the continuing investigation and developments in the hunt for the passengers will be attentively tracked and reported while the country mourns the potential loss of lives in this most recent Cessna plane tragedy.
