The comments were in response to those made by Moussa Faki Mahamat, the head of the African Union Commission, at the St. Petersburg meeting between Russia and Africa. Mahamat reaffirmed the African Union's commitment to maintaining the integrity and sovereignty of states while promoting peaceful crisis resolution through mutual compromise.
Kyiv's position on the issue is clear; it maintains that it is unwilling to engage in talks with Moscow as long as Russia continues to control a sizeable piece of Ukrainian land. It's been 17 months since the full-scale invasion, yet it's still an issue that has prevented any progress in the negotiations.
Russia, meanwhile, has insisted time and time again that any future negotiations must take into account the "new realities" brought about by the geographical adjustments made by the invasion.
Finding a common ground through dialogue seems hard as long as tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain high. Both parties retain their stances, allowing the world community to closely watch the situation for any further developments that might occur.
